Bird of the Week – Juvenile Little Blue Heron

littleblueheron (1 of 2)

This juvenile Little Blue Heron has been getting a decent amount of press on the birding lists. For the last week or so, it has taken up winter residence at the restoration area at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, Connecticut. This area can be seen just after the rotary if one is heading towards Meigs Point and East Beach. He/she looked downright chilled on the morning of these photos (December 30), with the temps in the mid-20s and cloud cover. I first observed him/her on the platform followed by several short winged hops around, trying to find a hunting spot and avoid slipping on the surface ice, which he/she is stalking in the photo above. After about 15-20 minutes of this, he/she flew back to the platform and the photo below is the landing. He/she looks pretty thin in that view. I hope that this guy is able to get through the coming winter.

The light was not great, which required higher than desired ISOs combined with below optimal shutter speeds. Photo information as follows:

  • above – Canon EOS 7D Mark II, EF 600mm f/4L IS II, ISO 1250, f/5.6, 1/640 sec
  • below – Canon EOS 7D Mark II, EF 600mm f/4L IS II, ISO 1000, f/5.0, 1/800 sec
